I just got repinned! Do you still respect me?

I love being repinned on Pinterest. Each time this happens my chances of going viral gets better. The more people who see it, the bigger chances of people liking and sharing on Facebook and Twitter. The picture below is the one that was just repinned.

These are my pictures and my words. I made a crucial mistake with the picture above as I didn’t put my link in it. I try to do this with new pictures. See picture below bottom left.

Zinc in New Haven, CT Restaurant Review

In one of my recent restaurant reviews I talked about the dive bar. There is a good feeling going into a place, dressing down and not worrying about what others might think. I enjoyed going into Viva Zapata and will go there again.

I also enjoy doing the exact opposite. Sometimes dressing up, using the right utensil and getting a fancy dish can make you feel like a hundred bucks. One of my favorite television shows of all time was HBO’s The Wire. In one episode a teacher took his inner-city students to nice respectable restaurant so they would feel like they were worth something. I think this is a positive.

I knew exactly what I was getting when I walked into Zinc Restaurant. Their address is 964 Chapel Street, New Haven CT 06510. Below is a picture of the outside of the building.

Besides giving a review, I want to give my readers a chance to learn more. It is always good to have more than one opinion when you want to dine out.

Zinc is my favorite restaurant in New Haven, CT. This is where I would go if I had to impress someone. I have found this restaurant to be fancy but not pretentious. I get the impression when I see Elizabeth and Shane that they are actually happy to see me and would like to see me come again.

One of the many things I like about coming here is their bread and dipping sauce. Below is a picture of it.

I ordered the Shrimp and Red Curry Panang for lunch. The description was “Udon Noodles/ Asian Vegetables + Shiitake Mushrooms “. Below is a picture of my meal.

I was honestly in a state of euphoria while I was eating. I wanted to light up a cigarette as it was that great. I have eaten here before but this was the best meal I have had there. It was a great feeling. I will be back.

Crush Sports Cafe in Milford, CT Restaurant Review

I am going to come out and admit the truth. I am constantly on a quest to find the best hamburger. I consider myself a New Haven, Connecticut person and we are known for being the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich. This picture below is Louis’ Lunch who makes the claim.

I have had their burger and to be completely honest I think it is just marginal. People will travel long distances to taste it themselves. The place does have a nice feel inside and I am proud of the history. I would probably lose a few friends if they knew that I think their burger is just okay.

I am a big fan of Yelp and I saw someone recommending Crush Sports Café in Milford, CT. Their address is 1015 Bridgeport Ave; Milford, CT 06460. I use to come here when it was Johnny Ray’s. Below is their picture outside.

Below is a picture of my meal. It was the blitz burger. It had the standard lettuce, tomatoes, onions etc. and my choice of cheese. I like blue cheese on my burger.

It was a good burger, but I was more satisfied with the burger I had at The Cask Republic. Their French Fries were standard, nothing to write home about.

Jeff the bartender/server was hospitable and I would come here again to try something else. It was a good hamburger, but not the best.

Viva Zapata in New Haven, CT Restaurant Review

My second review is Viva Zapata in New Haven, CT. Their address is 161 Park Street; New Haven, CT 06511. It is listed as a Mexican Restaurant. Below is their picture outside.

As you read different reviews you will see the words “dive bar.” I looked up the definition and found the following at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dive_bar… “A dive bar is a type of bar or pub. Dive bars generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere. They are often referred to by local residents as “neighborhood bars,” where people in the neighborhood gather to drink and socialize. Individual bars may be considered to be disreputable, sinister, or even a detriment to the community.”

This is not a place to get dressed up for. This is not a place to impress someone. It is not at all pretentious. If I was ever going to walk in a restaurant with sweatpants on this would be it. It is a very relaxed atmosphere.

Tammy, the bartender/waitress is very hospitable. It was a great afternoon as I found out she went to the same College that I went to, Southern Connecticut State University. It also happened to be the same college four of the customers went to so we had a great time talking about old bars, dorms and off campus parties.

Below is a picture of the chips and salsa that was brought to me. I have had it before and to be honest it was lacking with what I have had in the past. Maybe they were having a bad day but I still finished more of the chips.

Below is a picture of the Chicken Burrito I had. It was good and Tammy was kind enough to supply me with different hot sauces to put on the rice. I liked the Chipotle Sauce.

I had a Dos Equis with my burrito. Total bill was $10.83. I will be back.

Restaurant Review — The Cask Republic in New Haven, CT

I think Pinterest in a blogger’s dream. It is so much easier to share pictures as well as branding your reputation on the web. One thing I have wanted to do for a while is restaurant review. In this blog post I will do a review and show you how I am using Pinterest. Below are my steps.

1. I take a picture with my cell phone.
2. I send that picture to Pinterest on my cell phone.
3. I find the picture on Pinterest on my laptop, click on the picture and copy the embed code.
4. I write my blog post and use the embed code to show the picture.
5. I find the picture again on Pinterest on my laptop, click on “edit” and put my blog link in link.

Most people who repin my picture are unaware they can actually replace my link with theirs. Still it shows people are repinning my pictures and this increases my sphere of influence.

My first review is The Cask Republic in New Haven, CT. Their address is 179 Crown Street; New Haven, CT 06510. Below is their picture outside.

Below is a picture of my lunch. This is The Cask Republic Burger which is lettuce, tomato & red onion on a toasted English Muffin. It was well done which is the way I like it. The fries were also good, they didn’t put too much salt on them.

I am very picky about my burgers and The Cask Republic delivers. I have been here a couple times and both Timothy and Norm are excellent bartenders. This place would never be my hangout as it appears to be a younger crowd but it is worth checking out.

Heckler

This offbeat documentary starring comedian Jamie Kennedy explores the often contentious relationship between the stand-up performers onstage and the vocal critics in the audience. Interviews include comedian Bill Maher and director George Lucas.

I want to start off my saying this documentary was more about Jamie Kennedy with his handling of negative blog movie reviews than stand-up performers dealing with vocal critics. This is Jamie Kennedy’s movie and it was okay with me as it shows words hurt. I am recommending this as we all have to deal with negative criticism from time to time.

I obviously do blog movie reviews. I was told years ago if I wanted to build an online presence I would need to write what I know. I do know movies and like relating some of my own personal experiences with them. It is good for me to get words out. I know too well how words hurt so I try not to be too negative in my criticism. One movie in particular I did not like was “The Notebook.” I gave my readers compelling reasons why I didn’t like it. I actually hope more people will see this movie and have an intelligent discussion about what I didn’t like.

I wanted to explain myself as people who do blog movie reviews were criticized. Most of those critics seemed like okay people who were giving constructed criticism. There was just one critic who seemed to take delight in hurting Mr. Kennedy. I thought this one particular critic was portrayed as a mean spirited hostile jerk. Unfortunately there will always be people like this and we must be a little more thick skinned.

As mentioned before I am recommending this documentary as we all deal with unwanted negative criticism from time to time. It was enjoyable hearing some of the different characterizations of the heckler.

George Lucas was interviewed in this movie. He had a great quote. “There are two types of people in this world. There are creators and destroyers. I prefer to align myself with the creators because they bring something positive.”

I wanted to include a summer of 2012 picture in this review. I think about sandcastles. I am not talented enough to make one but appreciate the skill. It is funny to me how quickly someone makes one another person will come around and destroy it. The sandcastle above was destroyed by some kids after I took this picture. They noticed I was admiring it.

Wherever you go, there are you.

“Wherever you go, there you are.” — Buckaroo Banzai from 1984’s The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.

The first time I saw the movie and heard the quote was back in early 1988. I had just saw the movie on video and the quote stayed with me. I turned legal drinking age (21) that year and a friend urged me to go to Southern California with him. I never flew before but jumped on the chance to go.

When I got there one of the first things I did was run to the Pacific Ocean. A big wave knocked me down and that moment I totally fell in love with life. It was such a weird moment as I thought about the quote. No one with the exception of my childhood friend knew anything about me. They didn’t know my successes and they didn’t know my failures. No one knew that Alan Zibluk never kissed a woman until college. I was embarrassed by that in High School and even college, I am not now later in life.

Our trip started in Long Beach, went to Hermosa Beach and concluded in Venice Beach. I ended up loving Venice Beach.

When I came back to Connecticut that summer I wanted to move out there after college. I told everyone this and no one liked what I was saying. Different people said to me “you can’t leave your family.” Catholic guilt set in and I never did it.

I managed to go back to Venice Beach again in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 & 1994. In 1994 I had my first serious relationship and gave up on the west coast. She had no interest in going and hated hearing me talk about it.

My relationship ended December 1999 and in 2002 work brought me back to Southern California area. It was a hoot to go back to Venice Beach 8 years later after my last visit. Same time I felt a little old doing the things I did back in the early 90’s. I wasn’t in my 20’s anymore.

Ten years later in 2012 work brought me out again. I was working a work convention just like I did in 2002. I had to work my tail off. My work hours were 9:00 am to 11:30 pm. There were so many details to be taken care of. At the end of the work convention I was exhausted. I was finished Friday August 10, 2012. I took the Super Shuttle from the Anaheim Hilton to LAX. At LAX I took a cab back to Venice Beach. I left my luggage at the Venice Beach Suites & Hotel and immediately proceeded to the beach. Below is what I saw….

I admit I fell in love with life again. I took the picture and then proceeded to the Sidewalk Cafe for a Guinness and a shot of Jägermeister. Later that day I would watch the sunset. Another picture below.

“We all wear masks. Everyone, every day. Sometimes we wear them so much, we forget who we really are. And sometimes, someone comes along and shows us who we really want to be. Who we should be.” This quote I got from the action-thriller TV series Nikita starring Maggie Q. I This is another quote that stands out.

I was at peace with myself during this visit. This is who I should be. I thought about the mask I wear everyday. I thought about always pleasing others and finally getting the opportunity to please myself. I have come to the conclusion I am an introvert. I do like being alone and not having to explain myself.

As I left the Venice Beach Suites & Hotel I saw the sign below. I think it pretty much sums up everything. I am so glad I had the opportunity to visit. I won’t go as long to visit Venice Beach again.

I know I rambled. I just wanted to show off some of my vacation pictures.

Friends with Benefits

This raucous rom-com chronicles the relationship of two busy singles, Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis), who agree to include sex in their friendship — minus the emotions and commitment. But things get complicated.

“Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.” — Albert Camus

This movie is mostly fluff. I am okay with it as we all need a diversion from time to time. It is good to see something the way it should be. I liked this film as the main characters were actually friends. They both were not trying to “pull the wool over somebody’s eyes.” This kindness and respect towards each other is what is missing in many different relationships I see every day.

You can shoot plenty of holes in this movie. Some things were just a little too convenient to be real but as I stated above sometimes we need an escape. I thought Woody Harrelson was a hoot as Dylan’s friend. I am giving this one 3 stars.

God Bless America

Disgusted with American society and diagnosed with a brain tumor, Frank (Joel Murray) teams up with teenager Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr) and the two begin killing reality TV stars, bigots and others they find repugnant in Bobcat Goldthwait’s black comedy.

I want to start off by saying movies have always been an escape for me. Where else can we see good triumphing over evil? It is a chance to live through someone else vicariously. We get to do things we never will in real life.

I was very saddened by the tragic shooting for the new Batman movie in Colorado on July 20, 2012. There was so much anticipation for this movie and to have something like this happen is awful. I do not condone violence. I like watching movies and relating them to real experiences in hopes of making this world a little better.

I had to get that off my chest as I feel this movie is controversial. I was never a fan of Bobcat Goldthwait but I really liked this film. It was the ultimate revenge fantasy movie I have ever seen.

I mentioned the Colorado tragedy as one of the shootings does take place in a movie theatre. They take out the rude people in the movie theatre, the people who talk on the cell phone during the movie. It is rude and the reason why I don’t go to movie theatres anymore. This particular scene might be upsetting to some viewers.

They also take out one person who takes up two parking spots. Is their sense of entitlement that high? How about the protestors that demonstrates at funerals? How about these reality television stars that get rewarded for bad behavior?

This movie was not so much violent as it was thought provoking. It was the dialogue and not the violence that impressed me. Below is the speech the protagonist delivered at the end of the movie.

“My name is Frank. But that’s not important. The important question is ‘Who are you? ‘America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest and the loudest. We no longer have any common sense or decency. No sense of shame. There is no right and wrong. The worst qualities in people are looked up to and celebrated. Lying and spreading fear are fine. As long as you make money doin’ it. We’ve become a nation of slogan-saying, bile-spewing hate-mongers. We’ve lost our kindness. We’ve lost our soul.”

I hope more people see this movie and come to the say come conclusion than I did. That conclusion is we can do better. Our children deserves better. I don’t watch television anymore as it is just awful. There are no redeeming qualities.
